FARMHOUSE

A nearly 200-year-old traditional farmhouse in Kyoto returned to its original condition using only natural materials and historic techniques of its era. Leveraging it original wood-fired stove located centrally in the doma earthen space, and its tall ceilings, creating room to store tools, seeds, and feed, this farmhouse now serves as our Materials Archive and Test Kitchen. A living, breathing space that is ever-evolving, and ever-necessary.

For this architectural reorientation project, we do not use the western concept of "Architect". Instead, the entire space is being realized exclusively through the intuitive, hands-on collaboration of two classical master craftspeople. Daiku create the skeletal framework of the building, and the Sakan who create the meat of the body, the walls and floors.
